I've had rocks and chunks of asphalt get up on the belt but nothing has cut it yet. Asphalt is a real pain to clean off but it doesn't damage anything. If the cut was clean it had to be sharp metal or glass. Probably metal to survive a trip around the pulley. Dit it happen shortly after you started out? One really nasty trick I've heard of people playing on HD's is to put a razor blade on the belt just ahead of the rear pulley so that as soon as you start, the belt is cut. Sometimes it doesn't cut all the way through but the belt soon fails. This trick has resulted in a couple of accidents and at least one severe beating when the guy found out who did it. Watch out for this one.
